Terms
The fine print, in plain words.
The agreement between you and ExpnSplit: what it does, what it costs, and what each of us can expect.
Last updated 10 October 2026
About these terms
- These terms are an agreement between you and ExpnSplit, a business in New South Wales, Australia (“we”, “us”). By using ExpnSplit you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy.
- You must be 18 or older to use ExpnSplit.
- ExpnSplit is made for households in Australia. Amounts are in Australian dollars.
What ExpnSplit is, and isn’t
- ExpnSplit helps people who live together record shared expenses, see who owes whom, and record payments between them.
- ExpnSplit does not hold, send or receive money for you. Payments happen in your own bank, with PayID or cash; ExpnSplit only records them once you say they’ve been made.
- It is not a bank, a payment service, or financial, tax or legal advice. Balances are worked out from what members enter, so they are only as accurate as those entries.
Your account
- Use an email address you control and keep your phone and email secure: anyone with your sign-in codes can use your account.
- An account is for one person. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used yours.
Households
- A household’s admins decide who joins and can remove members. Admins can also make other members admins.
- An expense is visible to the people in it; balances and payments between members are visible to the whole household.
- When you leave or are removed, the expenses and payments you were part of stay with the household, so everyone else’s balances stay right. Payments still waiting for you to confirm when you are removed are cancelled.
Plans and payments
- Every new household starts with 4 weeks with Plus limits, free. After that it is on the free plan, which has lower limits, unless it pays for Plus. The current limits and prices are on the Pricing page.
- Plus is paid monthly in advance by card through our payment provider, Stripe, and renews each month until you cancel. Before you pay you’ll see the price and when you’ll be charged.
- Any household admin can cancel at any time in Settings. Plus then continues to the end of the month already paid for, and the household moves to the free plan.
- If a payment fails, we’ll retry for 7 days. If it still fails, the household moves to the free plan.
- Moving to the free plan never deletes anything. If the household is over a free limit, only adding more of that thing stops until it’s back under.
- We’ll tell you at least 30 days before a price change takes effect for you, and you can cancel before it does.
Refunds and your consumer rights
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled to cancel your service contract with us, and to a refund for the unused portion or compensation for its reduced value. You are also entitled to choose a refund or compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. If the failure does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have problems with the service fixed in a reasonable time and, if this is not done, to cancel your contract and get a refund for the unused portion.
Apart from those rights, we don’t give refunds for part of a month if you simply change your mind, because cancelling stops the next payment and Plus continues until the end of the month you paid for. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Using ExpnSplit fairly
- Don’t use ExpnSplit for anything unlawful, or to harass, threaten or deceive anyone, including in notes, money requests or receipt photos.
- Don’t try to get into accounts or households that aren’t yours, test our security without permission, overload the service, or copy it with automated tools.
- Only add other people’s information that your household needs, such as a shared bill.
- Don’t use ExpnSplit to manage money for others as a business.
What you enter
- What you enter stays yours. You let us store it and show it to the people it’s shared with, only so we can run ExpnSplit.
- You’re responsible for what you enter being accurate and yours to share.
Keeping ExpnSplit running
- We work to keep ExpnSplit available, secure and backed up every night, but it may sometimes be unavailable, for example during maintenance.
- We improve ExpnSplit over time and may change or remove features. If a change significantly affects what you’re paying for, we’ll tell you first and you can cancel.
Ending your use
- You can stop using ExpnSplit and delete your account at any time from your Profile.
- We may suspend or close an account or household that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or to protect other people or the service. Unless the law or safety prevents it, we’ll tell you why first and give you a chance to fix it.
- When a household’s first 4 weeks end, it moves to the free plan. Nothing is deleted because a trial ended.
Our responsibility to you
- We provide ExpnSplit with due care and skill, and you keep every right the Australian Consumer Law gives you.
- As far as the law allows, we’re not responsible for decisions or losses that come from entries members make, or for money that moves outside ExpnSplit, which we never handle.
- Where the law lets us limit our responsibility for a failure, it is limited to supplying the service again or refunding what you paid for it in the 12 months before the problem.
Disputes and law
- If something goes wrong, tell us first; most problems are quickest fixed that way.
- These terms are governed by the law of New South Wales, Australia, and its courts can hear any dispute. This doesn’t take away any rights you have under the law of the place you live that can’t be excluded.
Changes to these terms
- We may update these terms. For important changes we’ll tell you in the app and ask you to agree before you carry on; if you don’t agree, you can stop using ExpnSplit and cancel any paid plan.
